Single vs Combination Homeopathic Remedies for Animals

I’ve been wanting to touch on this topic for a while. The reason? So many animal-guardians try homeopathic combination remedies, and the number is staggering and scary!

Sometimes I literally have my mouth drop to the floor when I see how many combinations clients have tried or continue to try. Some have great success, while others don’t see the results they hoped for.

Don’t get me wrong: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with combination remedies. They have their place in supporting an animal’s overall wellbeing.

That said, it’s important to understand the key differences between single remedies and combination remedies, and when each might be most beneficial in supporting your animal’s health.

So, let’s get into it!

Single Remedies:
Single homeopathic remedies are exactly what they sound like: one remedy at a time.

A single remedy involves the use of one specific substance chosen to address a particular condition or set of symptoms. It’s based on the principle of “like cures like”, a substance that can cause symptoms in a healthy animal can also help resolve those same symptoms in a sick animal.

Here’s what one client had to say:
"After the first dose of Nux, he started to relax and had a deep, peaceful sleep. I couldn’t believe the difference a single remedy could make!"

Key benefits of single remedies:

  • Individualised: Single remedies are often selected based on the animal’s overall constitution; mental, emotional, and physical traits are all considered. This is the foundation of classical homeopathy.

  • Deep action: These remedies work on a constitutional level, aiming to balance the animal as a whole, rather than just supporting isolated symptoms.

  • Targeted: A single remedy addresses the totality of symptoms presented, including conditions that may have roots in trauma, generational patterns, or behavioural tendencies.

In short, single remedies are powerful because they consider the whole animal. When prescribed correctly, they can bring profound, lasting change.

The goal with a single remedy is always the same: to find the remedy that best matches the animal’s overall state.

Combination Remedies
Combination remedies, on the other hand, are blends of several homeopathic substances, designed to address multiple symptoms or conditions at once.

These remedies provide a broader, less individualized approach. They may alleviate discomfort in the short term but do not consider the animal’s full mental, emotional, or individual symptom picture, the very foundation of homeopathy.

Combination remedies are often available over the counter in health shops or online. They are convenient and accessible, and many people use them for acute situations.

While combination remedies can help manage symptoms quickly, they may not address the underlying cause of the illness. They are more about symptom management than deep, constitutional healing.

Putting It All Together
Both single and combination remedies have their place in animal care.

  • Single remedies offer a deep, personalised and individual approach to your animal's healthcare.

  • Combination remedies can be useful for convenience or acute symptom relief.

The key is understanding your animal’s needs. Are you seeking long-term, constitutional support, or short-term relief from common symptoms that potentially may not produce the result you want?

In my practice, the benefits of working with a single remedy outweigh combination remedies every time. Here’s why:

  • It’s easier to monitor progress with one remedy.

  • With combinations, how do you know which remedy is working, or causing a reaction?

  • Single remedies target the individual and the root cause.

  • Combination remedies may target the dis-ease but rarely address the underlying cause.

As you can see, a single remedy can be far more powerful than a combination. Never underestimate it.

The Takeaway
When in doubt, always consult a qualified animal homeopath. They can guide you in choosing the best approach for your animal’s unique health needs and help you understand when a single remedy or a combination might be most appropriate.
